Our team’s experience over lockdown represented an awakening – both for our brand and in each of our personal perspectives – about our purpose.
As stress levels rose in homes and behind closed doors, we found ourselves inundated with more and more questions about mental well-being and stress. We opened ourselves to answering all questions about CBD and increased our understanding of other powerful ingredients in the plant kingdom that could address the effects of stress.
The emotional impact of everyday stress affects more than just our mind. Any
type of stress can manifest on our skin, the largest organ in the body.
Mental health and skin health are directly connected. When we experience high levels of stress, our bodies move out of balance, which often results in inflammation that is visible on the skin. When the skin barrier is inflamed and compromised, moisture is lost, causing dry, dehydrated and sensitive skin. Stress IS skin deep.
We set out to understand the complex relationship between stress and skin, and solve it.
What does stressed skin look like?
Stress and your skin has a complex relationship. Any any kind of inflammation or irritation is likely a sign of stress making its way to your skin barrier.
The link between your mental state and your skin are hormones, specifically, cortisol, the so-called "stress" hormone.
Here's how it works: when you're stressed, the body prepares itself by releasing hormones, including cortisol, which regulates your metabolism and helps your body respond. Continued high levels of stress lead to an excessive release of cortisol, disrupts the hormone balance in your body and triggers a reaction in the endocrine system which can inflame the skin.
Under normal circumstances cortisol works to protect you, but an overproduction can do the opposite and erode your immunity and cause inflammation, resulting in common reactions like dry or itchy skin to more serious conditions like eczema, dermatitis or psoriasis.
Stress is a two-way street: what's on our mind affects body, and external factors that upset the body, disrupt our mental well being. Anti-stress skincare helps break that cycle by soothing fatigued skin and calming the mind.
Based on this science, we developed the Goodleaf Anti-stress Skincare range with a unique formula to combat stress, inside and out.
