In a world that is always “switched on” and experiencing major changes, it’s no surprise that compromised sleep and insomnia becoming more prevalent. A full 8 hours of sleep is seen as a luxury yet it is the essence of our wellbeing.
Good sleep improves our productivity, mood, mental health, cognitive performance and also boosts our immune system – which is very important during this time where we need to be in good health and take care of ourselves. Allowing your body to have the right amount of rest is essential, but why is that so hard?
Well, the causes of sleep deprivation and insomnia are endless. Some causes include the stress and anxiety we experience in our day-to-day lives, chronic pain, medications we take, caffeine, external environmental factors such as being uncomfortable, the bright light from our mobile or laptop devices, loud noises and many more.
So how can CBD oil help you have a good night’s rest so you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle… life?
CBD is the non-psychoactive compound of cannabis that does not get you “high” so if you’re not into smoking marijuana, CBD can still do the job.
Although there is space for more research to be done on how CBD can improve sleep, there are a few studies that have been conducted as well as plenty of anecdotal evidence available.
Stress and anxiety often go hand-in-hand with sleep deprivation. This 2019 study aimed to test how CBD can improve sleep and anxiety in 72 patients. Each patient was given 25mg of CBD per day in the form of a capsule.
Their sleep and anxiety was tracked every month with results that speak for themselves - 78% of the patients experienced improved sleep and anxiety levels. There has also been research conducted on how CBD can be used to treat chronic pain, which causes the discomfort that can often result in a disrupted sleep cycle.
Popular pharmaceutical pain and sleep medications can have numerous negative side effects on your body such as constipation, diarrhoea, dizziness, headaches, daytime drowsiness, heartburn and more. CBD, on the other hand, is a natural remedy and, thus, has very limited side effects.
Start low, go slow
Although the recommended dosage amount for CBD in South Africa is 20mg per day, we always recommend starting with a low dosage and gradually increasing until you feel it’s working well for you.
CBD usage is a personal journey and all depends on your particular body and situation.
A different type of “entourage effect”?
Of course, there are many other factors that can be done in conjunction with CBD consumption to help you have a solid night’s sleep and maximise your rest
We would always encourage leading a balanced life with regular exercise, a healthy diet and an established routine.
Having a routine in the day and night can be very helpful especially now that we are all working from home. We know this can be tough but it is necessary. Really take this time to slow things down and take care of yourself. Sleep is the best and most essential form of self-care. Perhaps you might light some candles, have a warm bath, meditate, or even listen to some good tunes.
Find out what works for you - whatever it may be - and go forth into a peaceful rest.
